To avoid the comment about burn out there is a trick.


This is the original image with highlights/burnout on the rocks


I used the dropper to pick the colour of the stones.
I created a layer and filled it with the stone colour.
I added a mask, washing machine, and filled the mask with black
I set the mode to darken.
I used a white brush to bring the stone colour back into the highlights.
The colours still didn't look real so I turned the opacity down until it felt right.


Final image. The levels layer was used to bring detail back in the very dark areas.
